Welcoming Spring: Hard copy inspiration to spring clean your life

March: our yo-yo weather month. From one final giant snow storm to seeing that guy driving with the convertible top down, we really run the gamut this month. Spring is (kind of) here. While we wait for the weather to make up its mind, the change of season always makes me think about changing up my routine.

I admittedly got a little lazy with my routines this winter. It’s time to spring clean my life! After some thought, there are three routines I have decided to change this spring:

1. I need to find inspiration to cook delicious, healthy dinners
2. I need to commit to less screen time (again) and
3. I need to find ways to better organize myself.

The Internet is a wonderful place for recipes, meditation apps and organization apps. But after spending most of my day looking at a screen, I want to disconnect in the evening and be less reliant on technology so I can engage in real life. I want hard copy solutions for my problems! It was the perfect reason to finally check out the new McNally Robinson tucked away on the second floor at The Forks Market.

Here’s what I picked up:

1.     Food inspiration

I want a cookbook to have and to hold. I am forever being tagged in healthy recipes on Instagram that I can never find again. And I want to get pages dirty, leave handwritten notes on my favourites and have something that doesn’t fade to a black screen. I browsed the cookbook section and found this gem: Oh She Glows Everyday by Angela Liddon, with easy, healthy meals. I have often been frustrated making her recipes from my tiny phone screen, and I am pretty pumped to have a hard copy version with her recipes all in one place.

2.     Less screen time

There has been too much Netflix and mindless social media scrolling in the evenings this winter. I have been going to bed later and not having great sleeps. One of my tried-and-true tricks for a great sleep is to read in bed for 20 minutes. It perfectly unwinds my mind from the day, engages my imagination and somehow always makes me just the right amount of sleepy.

But I feel like I can’t “get into a book” right now. Perhaps the Internet is killing my attention span? I had heard a lot about The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur. It’s a book of poetry. Yes, poetry. I can’t put it down! The writing is so simple, beautiful, complex, heartbreaking and inspiring. It makes me think. It’s the perfect escape and much more inspiring than Instagram stories.

3.     Organize myself

I have lists on my phone, lists on my laptop and scribbles on loose paper everywhere. I need a better system. I love writing things down. I love lists and crossing things off lists. They have a huge selection of journals at McNally. I was pumped to consolidate all my to-do lists in one place. Everything goes in this journal now. Everything. I am already more relaxed.

If you’re looking for hard copy inspiration to help with your routines this spring, pop into the McNally Robinson Booksellers at The Forks. Whether you want to relax with a good book, cook up some new meals or find inspiration in your world, they have thousands of hard copy tangible solutions to help you find your spring mojo.

As a bonus, McNally Robinson is giving away a $25 gift card. To enter to win, head to The Forks' Facebook Page, share the post about this article and comment with your favourite bookworm friend. The contest will close Friday, March 9 at 3PM.

Warming Huts wrap-up: Photos that made our jaws drop

The 2017/2018 season for the Red River Mutual Trail was the best yet! It broke two records. TWO! It was the longest it's ever been stretching 10 kilometers from Queen Elizabeth Way on the Red River and all the way to Arlington on the Assiniboine. It lasted 72 whole days, which is the longest we've ever been able to enjoy the Red River Mutual Trail.

Not to mention the incredible Warming Huts that adorned it this year. We're so lucky to have a city full of talented photos with killer Instagram accounts to document it. Here are some of our favourite Insta photos from the Warming Huts on their frozen river home:

A New Year: 3 Ways to Feel Great & Be Active in 2018

Happy New Year! Here we go! It’s 2018! We’re going do all those things we said we’re going to do. Let’s go! Be healthy! Eat less junk! Lose that weight! Exercise every day! Go! Go! Go!

Personally, I find New Year’s resolutions a bit tiring. They are good intentions that are often set up to fail. We are a culture that wants measurable results fast. (Read: weight loss)

When I begin working with people, I always ask, “How do you feel? How do you want to feel? What does being healthy look like to you?” The answer is never as straight forward as a number on a scale.

Being healthy is a way of life.

I’m inviting people who want to make resolutions to ‘get healthy’ and ‘take better care of themselves’ to begin with some basic lifestyle changes. It’s the first step to creating a framework of self-awareness and habits that are sustainable, enjoyable and fulfilling.

So, if you are resolving to ‘feel better’ or ‘take better care of yourself’ in 2018, I’ve put together my top three habit changes that will lay the groundwork for you to work toward your healthy lifestyle.

Starting today. Right now.

1. LESS SCREEN TIME

Participate in real life with undivided attention. The next time you are at The Forks, put your phone away. Or better yet, leave it at home. Be present with the people you’re with. I’ve started the practice of phone-free outings on the weekend. We are ridiculously tethered to communication. If I’m meeting you at The Common I’ll USE MY EYES to find you instead of texting. My phone-free days are relaxing. You see the world. Notice people around you. Don’t wait in a line and mindlessly scroll, just be. Starting point: turn your phone to airplane mode when you’re hanging out with pals.

2. DEVELOP HEALTHY TOOLS TO MANAGE STRESS

We all have stress. It’s an inevitable part of life. Identifying plausible and sustainable self-awareness strategies to manage those tougher days is a game changer in mental health. My go to is a run. Nothing clears the head and gives me a fresh perspective like a run. Take a bath. Read a book. Go outside for a walk. Connect with nature. Starting point: after a rough day, go for a 10-minute walk before that glass of wine. See how it feels.

3. SAY YES TO NEW THINGS

It has long been said that having new experiences is one of the most fulfilling parts of life. Old habits die hard. Stop saying no. Try something new. Be open. It’s amazing how life can open up when you step out of your comfort zone. You don’t know what you like until you try it. You have to build your healthy lifestyle by trying new things to see what fits. Starting point: when someone asks you to go for a skate, instead of saying “I don’t skate” you say: “I’ve never skated but am going to try!” (Then send me an email and I’ll give you some skate lessons!)

These three practices are pillars to my health and happiness. Even if you only resolve to try one of them, it will nudge you in the right direction. Make the changes from the inside out—the right way to build a sustainable healthy life for the mind, body and soul.

Looking forward to more health, happiness and adventures at The Forks in 2018! Happy New Year!
